How to Choose Cabinet Hinges: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Start with the hinge type

Furniture hinges fall into two broad families: visible hinges (butt hinges, decorative hinges) and concealed hinges. Concealed hinges — the European cup hinge — dominate modern kitchens and wardrobes because the mechanism is hidden when the door is closed, the door is fully adjustable, and production can be automated. Within concealed hinges you choose between screw-on and clip-on mounting: screw-on hinges are fixed with two screws on the hinge arm and are traditional and low-cost; clip-on hinges click onto a mounting plate, which speeds up production-line assembly and makes doors easy to remove for transport or service. Soft-close versions add a hydraulic damper that slows the door in the last few millimeters. For frameless doors, pivot hinges are a compact alternative. If your project is glass doors or aluminum profiles, you will need specialty hinges rather than standard cup hinges.

The five specifications that matter

1) Cup diameter — 35 mm is the European standard and fits most drilling patterns; other diameters exist for special doors. 2) Drilling distance — the distance from the cup edge to the drill holes, typically 3–7 mm (48 mm and 52 mm hole distances are the most common cup patterns). 3) Opening angle — 90° for standard doors, 105°–110° for most kitchen cabinets, 135°–165° for wide-opening or specialized layouts. 4) Overlay style — full overlay (door covers the cabinet side), half overlay (paired doors share a partition) or inset (door sits inside the frame). 5) Mounting — screw-on or clip-on. Soft-close: what to test, not just what to buy

A soft-close hinge is only as reliable as its damper. Ask your supplier three questions: What is the rated cycle life? (80,000 open/close cycles is the quality benchmark for kitchen hinges.) Is the damper sealed? (A sealed, factory-calibrated damper needs no on-cabinet adjustment and lasts longer.) What salt spray test is applied to the finish? Materials, finishes and where they belong

Cold-rolled steel is the standard hinge body for kitchens and furniture: strong, formable and inexpensive, normally plated with nickel or chrome for corrosion resistance. Stainless steel 304 is specified for humid, coastal or sanitary environments; 316 adds molybdenum for marine and high-chloride conditions and can be mirror-polished. Finishes matter for both appearance and durability: nickel (classic), chrome (bright), bronze and black (design-led kitchens), satin (contemporary). If your market is coastal, humidity-heavy or outdoors, choose stainless rather than plated steel — and ask for the salt spray report rather than a verbal guarantee.
