Drawer Slides Guide: Types, Loads, Lengths and Selection

Side-mount ball bearing vs hidden slides, damped vs push-to-open, load ratings, length codes and installation basics — everything a furniture factory needs to specify drawer slides correctly.

Ball-bearing or hidden slide?

Side-mount ball-bearing slides attach to the sides of the drawer and cabinet; the rail is visible when the drawer is open. They are economical, easy to install, and available in three-fold full-extension versions with soft-close options. Hidden (undermount) slides attach under the drawer box; the mechanism is invisible when the drawer is open, movement is synchronized (both sides move together), mounting is tool-free with quick release, and the front connector adjusts the door face in 1D, 2D or 3D. Hidden slides are the standard for European kitchens and premium furniture; ball-bearing slides remain popular for office furniture, RTA and budget lines. Your choice depends on the visible design, the budget and the production method. If you are still comparing options, browse our [drawer slides collection](https://skytophardware.com/en/drawer-slides/) — including ball-bearing slides and hidden slides — and see which type fits your production line.

Damped, push-to-open or standard

Damped slides close softly in the last 40–45 mm using an integrated buffer — no extra damper hardware on the cabinet. Push-to-open slides open with a light press on the drawer face, which lets designers remove handles entirely (handle-free kitchens). Some series combine both: damped closing plus push-to-open. Standard slides have no closing control and are the most economical. When choosing, think about the user: families and hotels prefer damped; minimalist and handle-free designs need push-to-open; budget programs use standard. For a ready-made damping solution, our [soft-close drawer slide with silent buffer](https://skytophardware.com/en/drawer-slides/4512c-silent-buffer-drawer-slide/) is a drop-in choice for standard cabinet widths.

Hidden slide series in our program are rated at 40 kg per pair; two-section hidden series at 25 kg. Lengths run from 250 mm to 610 mm depending on series. Order codes are complete per nominal length: AJHA6250AA means the AJHA series at 250 mm with damped function; AJRA6250AA is the push-to-open version at the same length. To select the right length, measure cabinet depth and drawer length; for outer drawers, cabinet depth equals nominal length plus a small allowance. If in doubt, send us your cabinet depth and drawer length and we confirm the code the same day. Every slide we ship carries a clear order code — see the full size and load matrix in our drawer slides collection and the drawer slide manufacturer page for factory details.

Installation and adjustment basics

Hidden slides mount with tool-free quick release: fit the drawer box onto the rails and push in until it clicks. Front connectors adjust the face in 1D (height), 2D (height + side) or 3D (height + side + depth), so doors align without re-drilling. For damped versions, the buffer is integrated and factory-calibrated — no damper hardware on the cabinet and no field adjustment. Panel thickness compatibility: our hidden series come in 16 mm and 19 mm versions; two-section series cover half-extension and small full-extension drawers. Always install both rails level and parallel; a 1–2 mm misalignment causes friction and noise. For detailed installation practice and jig-free cabinet fitting, Fine Homebuilding publishes step-by-step drawer hardware guides.

OEM and quality expectations

For OEM programs, agree on five things before production: cycle life (our slides test beyond 50,000 open/close cycles), surface finish (galvanized, electrophoretic black, custom colors), lengths and order codes, packaging (export carton, retail blister), and MOQ (100 sets stock, 5,000 sets custom). Ask for the cycle test report and salt spray data, and confirm container packing — for example, a 20-foot container holds approximately 18,000 sets of 4512C slides. A factory that publishes these numbers is easier to trust than one that promises quality in words. Before placing a production order, run our factory checklist for choosing a furniture hardware supplier and request samples from our drawer slide OEM page.
